Sofa covers can be a troublesome errand, and a few endeavours can accomplish more mischief than great.  Cleaning them can be a difficult task, and some attempts can do more harm than good. Moreover, with loving tender care to refresh your home it gives that new looks.

Cleaning Code

Looking for a sticker or label beneath the cushions on a sofa that contains a cleaning code is the first step in cleaning a fabric sofa. This code is represented by a letter. Keep in mind that not all sofas have this code.

S or P

The cleaning code of S or P indicates that the fabric should be dry-cleaned with a solvent. These sofas should avoid water at all cost as it can cause discolouration, shrinkage and water stains. Dry cleaning can be best handled by a well-trained cleaner, who will rub on the solvent and vacuum it off.  After dry cleaning and that the stain and deep dirt still remains on it, it may be time to change a new set of sofa.

For S cleaning codes that are micro fibre sofa, rubbing with approval alcohol is advisable but with caution.  Try filling a clean spray bottle with the alcohol, and mist the affected area until it is saturated. Using a plain, uncoloured sponge, rub the sprayed area vigorously. This method works to lift most types of dirt from the fabric, though it can also cause the material to become stiff. If this occurs, take a white bristle brush, like the kind that could be used for dishes, and rub it across the surface of the sofa. This should soften up the material again and cause it to fluff up a little.

W

For W cleaning codes these sofas can be clean with water and water-based solutions and steam cleaning can be an option. Look for a steam cleaner that can handle around 300 psi when you have to clean your sofa. Attempt to use a very small amount of cleaning product when steam cleaning, as it can be difficult to draw out, and may leave a film on the surface of the fabric. Any cleaning solutions used for cleaning of the sofa that is not thoroughly removed from the sofa fabric will attract new dirt and become dirtier. Steam from the hot water is able to break up and remove the dirt from the sofa’s material and therefore a small amount of cleaning solution is needed.

Be sure to go over the steam cleaned areas with a dry setting at least twice to remove as much moisture from the sofa as possible. After cleaning the sofa, keep the cushions in an upright position preferable on a ventilated surface to allow air to circulate around them and dry them thoroughly. Using water-based cleaners should be able to remove tough stains and dirt spots. However, be aware that many of these contain harsh chemicals that can cause damage to the fabric. Always conduct a spot test first to ensure it is safe.

S/W

An S/W indicated code marking on a sofa means it can be cleaned with upholstery foam, solvents and water-based cleanser. Ideally, the preferred way for such cleaning is dry foam and solution. Steam cleaning is not recommended although water is acceptable for S/W indicated code.

X

When a sofa has an X cleaning code, avoid water-based cleaners, solvents or any kind of foam. The only option for these sofas is to vacuum them. Bring out any cushions outside and hitting it hard to remove dust and other dirt that may have accumulated over time.

Spot Testing

Take a minute to do a small spot test first before launching a major cleaning of the sofa.  Look for an area inconspicuous such as the side or back of the sofa. The best location is at the bottom of the sofa. Apply the cleaning product to a small area in the manner suggested by the manufacturer. Allow the solution sufficient time to dry up. Check for changes in loss of colours, changes in the texture of the sofa fabric. Be sure to inspect or check the area in full light. When changes are evident then do decide whether to proceed with the same cleaning method to another part of the sofa or to discontinue.

Stains

Most challenging and difficult aspects of sofa cleaning are stain removing. Follow the product instructions with a mild fabric cleaner and pre-soak any of the stains from the fabric sofa. Once the stain is loosened by the fabric cleaner, attempt to blot it out. Two substances that can work well on stains are white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Be aware that hydrogen peroxide is liable to lighten the colours of the sofa and vinegar may be corrosive to organic materials. Always conduct a spot test when you introduce a new cleaning solution.

Alternately you can use baking soda into the stain and softly scrub with a brush. Vacuum it out after more than ten minutes of waiting.

Machine Washing

Some cushion covers are machine-washable. This information can be found on a sofa’s label. Simply remove the covers from the sofa and toss it into the washing machine with a mild solution and have it run for a wash with cold water.
